We have the first trailer for Big Hero 6! What is Big Hero 6? It’s the next effort from the Disney team that gave us Wreck-It Ralph and Frozen (so…good pedigree there) and is theoretically based on a Marvel comic from the 1990s of the of the same name, although if you blinked back then you probably missed it.
Big Hero 6 is a superhero team led by 13-year-old supergenius Hiro Takachiho, and his robot bodyguard, Baymax. The original storyline of the comic is a pretty eye-popping combination of superhero arcs, nuclear anxiety, and family angst, so we’re really excited to see how it translates into a film.
Co-Director Don Hall selected the story and pitched it to John Lasseter a few years after Disney’s acquisition of Marvel Entertainment. Hall was joined by Chris Williams (who also worked on Bolt and whose next project might be a Philip K. Dick adaptation) and while this is very much a Disney film rather than a Marvel Cinematic Universe venture, Joe Quesada is involved in the production. Check out more stills from the film here and here!
Big Hero 6 opens November 7th.
This trailor plays off of the same comic ideas that they used for the teaser trailor for The Incredibles. If that corilation leads to a movie that is as good as The Incredibles, this will be quite the year for Disney. Can’t wait to see some more.
cute.
But the boy looks a lot like Hiccup.
Did I just watch a trailer that amounted to a two-minute long fat joke?
Interesting enough trailer.
Interesting fact: This movie is based on an obscure (I mean, really obscure; too obscure to mine for the Marvel Cinematic Universe apparently) Marvel comic book, but they’re scooping the characters out of the Marvel universe and putting them down in an original setting.
I’m just a little bit concerned by some of the character names, like “Wasabi no Ginger” or “Gogo Tamago.” (“Tamago” is Japanese for “egg”.) These might have worked in the context of the original comic book, but I’m a little worried they might not go over too well with the modern PC crowd.
But I could be worrying needlessly.
I actually remember Big Hero 6, as I was always of fan of the lesser known B list (or would they be C or D list!) heros of the Marvel universe. While the trailer doesn’t really follow the original story too closely (Baymax was very serious bodyguard “muscle” in the comics), it does look promising and I’ll be looking forward to seeing what they do with this very unusual superhero team.

Is it sad times ahead for Pixar when they resort to imitating Dreamworks?
